Discussions for construction of dam on Katharo Plateau

The subject of a meeting held on Thursday in Kritsa, was one which has been a long time wish of locals, in order to strengthen their agricultural and livestock production in the wider area of Kritsa – the construction of a dam in the area known as “Tsibitsi”, on the Plateau of Katharo.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy for the Region for Lasithi, Pelagia Petraki, the Mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Antonis Zervos, a representative from the Natural History Museum of the University of Crete, from the Department of Geodiversity, Mr. Babis Fasoulas, along with other specialists in their own fields from various bodies involved in the decision and planning, of such projects.

Those in attendance, approved a study, for a management plan for the Plateau of Katharo, for future interventions relating to the area.

The Mayor of Agios Nikolaos spoke after the meeting and said that the project has been delayed and a lot has changed since the original proposal was put onto paper in 2000. The scheme needs a review. A second meeting will soon be held, on a political level, in order to take steps to find solutions, to issues that need immediate action.

In terms of the proposed position of the dam-reservoir, for which the Museum of Natural History has considered to be the most suitable, as “Tsibitsi”, Mr. Zervos suggested that a further study would be required to get a more current indication of the volume of water necessary to be able to cover in part or in total, the needs of the entire area of Kritsa.
