First refugees due to arrive in Crete in 30 days

During a meeting held by the Municipalities of the Region of Crete, it was announced that overall on the Island, 125 properties will be rented for the purpose of housing refugees. Each property will need to accommodate up to six people.

The Mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Mr. Antonis Zervos, emphasised that in some areas there has been interest from Hoteliers, who are considering making their units available for the cause.

As yet, it has still to be clarified what exactly the role of each Municipality will be and what procedures they will need to follow.
In the meantime, the first 700 refugees – 30% of the total number allocated to Crete, are expected to begin to arrive in waves, in approximately 30 days.
Two offices will operate in Heraklion and Chania, which will be responsible for the management of the operation, and will employ a total of 45 people, including social workers.
