The truth about volunteers

The truth really is hard and uncomfortable…….

1. A volunteer is not paid for his work…on the contrary, he pays for his beliefs..

2. A volunteer doesn’t have set working hours….on the contrary, the time he gives to voluntary activities, is from his own free time..

3. A volunteer who takes part in collective actions….is elected into positions of responsibility and is not appointed by his superiors to do their favours…..on the contrary, the volunteer is accountable only to the whole college that honored him to represent it.

4. A volunteer may work for the common good and to tire himself to leave behind results….but that others will gladly take advantage of.

In a few days, we will reach the sixth year where volunteers from our town, took the time and energy to create the Techspace of Sitia.

I can still remember the dead pigeons and mice, the chewing gum stuck around, the mold, the graffiti and the loads of rubbish that lay there for years…you can only be CRAZY to make this miracle happen!

Today, the Philharmonic orchestra is based here now, side by side with regular art exhibitions and events……
I feel ENORMOUSLY PROUD for every voluntary action I have participated in…..

And because some people are shaking a finger at us, as stakeholders in local events……they should watch the video, which shows another of our efforts, from three years ago, which was to protect the Sitian environment, that is so clear of light that it is perfect for watching the stars:

Gentlemen, your empathy will not bend us..
We work and are present, here in this town..
And we also have the right to criticise…
We at least will pay for our actions….
Whilst you, classically, are paid for yours….
Oh….and so I don’t forget, as a mathematician, I believe solely in the truth of Algebra and Geometry!!!
