Meeting Haritakis and Arnaoutakis with agenda the Prefecture of Lasithi

A working meeting was held yesterday Thursday 17th March, in Heraklion, between the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Lasithi, Mr. Thomas Haritakis and the Leader of the Region of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis.

Following the news articles of last week which reported that the new Northern National Highway (BOAK), would not extend into the Prefecture of Lasithi, Mr Haritakis asked for and received, the full support of the Region, for a new, modern highway which would begin in Kissamos and continue all the way along the Island to Sitia.

In addition, with the imminent commencement of this year’s tourist season, the President of the Chamber of Commerce, asked that, with immediate effect, the section of the existing national highway, that is undergoing construction, should be opened to traffic. Mr. Arnaoutakis gave his assurance that the road would reopen again in April.

On the other hand, Mr. Haritakis informed the leader of the Region, of the progress in the preparations for the 2nd Agricultural Exhibition, “Agroexpo 2017”, which is planned to take place in Ierapetra between 26 and 28th May this year and in which, the Region is a co-organiser. They discussed the additional-secondary activities, that will take place parallel to the exhibition.

Cruise Tourism was another important item on the agenda in their discussions, with Mr. Haritakis again asking for the support of the Region in that area, including their participation in the Tourism Fair in Hamburg.

Initiatives to help overcome the difficulties being encountered in the creation of the diving parks planned for Crete, was the final subject in which the help of the Region, would be vital in moving forward with this project.

In conclusion, Mr. Haritakis brought Mr. Arnaoutakis up to date on the activity of the Chamber of Commerce for Lasithi in Co-E.U. funded projects under their jurisdiction, which with better cooperation with the Region, can bring the best results.
