An unexpected tragedy has come to shock the community of Ierapera today after the suicide of an elderly man this morning, Tuesday 18/4/2017.
The man, aged 83, appears to have taken his own life early in the morning, with a double-barrelled shot gun in the garden of his home in Viglia. The police are at the property, at this time, examining the scene, to discover the exact details surrounding the incident.
The only other person in the house at the time, was the man’s wife who was in another room and who, on hearing the sound of gunshots, was terrified, not knowing what was happening.
In the elderly man’s trouser pocket, the authorities found a handwritten note which explained the reason for his decision.
The medical examiner is enroute and will examine the body at the scene, before it is removed for autopsy, in Heraklion.
