Serious shortage of hotel beds in Sitia – they are having to turn tourists away

Sitia and the surrounding area, has become an attractive destination for the Scandinavian market and especially for Danish tourists, who are about to start “invading” in May with two new charter flights. A third flight is on standby, but at the moment, there are not sufficient beds in hotels in the area, to accommodate all the holidaymakers.
The President of the Hoteliers Association of Sitia, Mr Giannis Kakourakis, spoke on Radio Kriti and expressed his satisfaction for the fact, but also his concerns that there have been no new tourist units, or additional beds created in the last few years, with the result being that there is no possibility to absorb any additional capacity of tourist traffic.
“With the two flights that we have made an agreement to bring here, we will have difficulty accommodating everyone in Sitia and Palaikastro, but with the third flight on standby, it will be almost impossible, to find places for them to stay, in the area” , the president said.
It should be noted that the Mayor of Sitia, Mr. Thodoris Paterakis, on his return from a tourist fair in Stockholm, reported that he had received very positive messages of interest from the Danish visitors, who stopped at the stand he was on, along with the Region of Crete representatives and the GTO, to have their holidays in the pretty town of Sitia.
The start will come on 14th May, 2017 and the area is already getting ready to welcome them via it’s airport.
It is very important for our airport to see charter flights arriving through it and for the wider area to become a recognised destination, but he also expressed his anger at the fact that if the seafront road is not repaired, after it’s collapse, then the area towards Vai and Palaikastro will be cut off and there will be no access towards there. “I really hope that the government will pass the amendment necessary, for the works to move forward quickly, other wise, we will be made to look like complete fools”, said Mr. Kakourakis.
