Neapolis Junior School pupils care and they show it!

As part of an initiative called “I care and I act”, in a voluntary role, the pupils of the 5th and 6th grade of the 2nd Junior School of Neapolis, took action for the cause, on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd March.

The children visited the Daycare Centre of the Diocese of Petra and Heronissos to take part in the preparation and distribution of meals that the Church provide daily, for individuals and families in the Diocese who cannot cater for themselves.

The pupils started out with money that they had collected for the purpose and did their shopping in a local supermarket, for all the ingredients necessary to cook the meal. They were met at the Church Daycare Centre by it’s volunteer manager and the other volunteers, mostly ladies, and some who have worked for the cause for the 21 years of it’s existence, with love and “meraki”, as if they were cooking to put a meal on the table with their own families. The younger members of the team, then distribute the meals and keep company whilst they eat, with those who are in need of their support.

Sleeves were pulled up and hands washed and the young children set to work on the menu of penne with soya mincemeat sauce (as we are in Lent). The burners were lit and very soon, the kitchen was filled with the aroma coming from the saucepans. After the essential taste test, the meals were packaged up and placed carefully in the church vehicle that was waiting to deliver the portions to the surrounding villages in the area…..

And before they left, they helped with cleaning and washing up and left the cuttlefish for tomorrow’s lunch defrosting for their friends and fellow pupils, who would take over the next day, as they had today.

The sole goal of their involvement? To help those less fortunate than themselves.

And feeling proud and satisfied with their efforts, they declared that they will carry on!!
