Cretan father charged with domestic violence

The news that a father from Chania has been held in custody, with charges of repeated acts of domestic violence against his two children, has shocked the people of Crete.

Even the more experienced officers of the Police Division of Chania, where stunned by the descriptions of violence that they heard from the two boys, 16 and 17 years old. They explained that their nightmare at the hands of their father, has been going on as far back as when they were babies and that during all those years, he had no reservations to hit them, even for the most insignificant reasons.

The wife and mother of the boys was also a victim of domestic violence and she was always too afraid, to disclose the drama of their lives, behind closed doors. The years went by and the situation finally became more and more unbearable.

A shocking message that one of the boys had sent from his father’s mobile phone, to a school friend apparently said that “I would prefer to die than have him kill me”, was what finally alerted the authorities to the situation, with them able to unravel the facts of this horrific case.

The 45 year old unemployed man from Chania, was arrested on Monday, where he was then taken before the Public Prosecutor. It was decided that he should be held in custody, as the charges of domestic violence against him, are judged to be highly serious.

The mother and boys are now in a safe environment and are starting to try to mend the wounds, left behind as a result of the nightmare they have lived for so many years.
