59 million euros in EU funding for recycling projects on Crete

The Ministry of Economy and Development has announced the financing of three major integrated waste management projects in Crete, with a total cost in public spending of € 59 million.
The signatures fell on the agreement which concerns the construction of plants in Archanes-Asterousia, which will produce compost, a unit of mechanical refuse and composting at the landfill site of the Municipality of Hersonissos and finally, a waste treatment plant in Amaras and where funds will now be produced from the new EU National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF).
The three Units incorporate modern practices in waste management, with the emphasis on processing and reuse. At the same time, the rationalization carried out by the services of the Ministry of Economy has considerably reduced their construction costs.
The deputy Minister stated, on the occasion:
“With these projects we are finally confronting the problem of waste management in Crete. The three new plants are part of the most comprehensive national and regional waste management plan based on the principles of reduction, reuse and recycling, which is an integral part of a radically different environmental policy that protects and upgrades the country’s environmental capital. We are committed to funding all the necessary projects and infrastructures in local societies that ensure environmental balance which protect the health and the quality of life of citizens. ”
