Two additional helicopters strengthen Cretan Fire Services

Crete’s capacity to fight wild fires, ahead of the new high risk season, will very soon be strengthened with the addition of two specialist fire fighting helicopters.
One will be based in Chania to be readily available to the west of the island, whilst the other will be stationed in Heraklion, and will be on stand by for the needs of the east side of Crete.
In a meeting which took place in Chania recently to discuss and plan any further measures that need to be taken and at what level, to ensure the reduced risk of forest fire outbreaks, but also the speedy response of all involved in putting out any fire, before it can do even more damage.
The Fire Service believes that this year’s organisation and the directives that the individual Councils have been given, will see a fire season less serious than in previous years.
