The strategic future of Crete

The strategic future of Crete, not only as an Island, but especially as a Region of Greece, is to be found to the South, due to the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (ΕΕΖ).

The existence of the nine marine plots is a serious indication, after they were cut up during the seismic research by the Norwegian company PGS, indicates that there are targeted fields of fuel deposits.

Also, with the discovery of the gigantic field “Zor”, in the Egyptian EEZ, but also the plot 11 in the Cyprus EEZ, everyone is now certain that there are similar deposits, south of Crete and especially in the marine plots already mapped out.

In practical terms, this means that Crete will be a crossing point for the EastMed pipeline, but also for the electrical cable EuroAsia Interconnector and will also be a source of energy.

It is not possible for the area not to be developed and it would be a good idea for those owning land in the south, that they once considered as just a pile of rocks, do not rush to sell now at any price, because the future is in these areas.

So, the authorities of the Region of Crete, must continue to inform the public of Crete, to keep them upto date on the progress of the situation, when it is certain that eventually, a LNG* type terminal will be built, something that will create thousands of jobs, as a result of the needs to maintain it’s operation.

*An LNG terminal is a facility for degasifying the liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipped in by LNG tankers from the production zones.
