Workers in the waste recycling factory, on the Industrial Estate in Heraklion, couldn’t believe their eyes recently, as the sorting process took place, as it did every day.
One of the team who was responsible for the selection of paper from the conveyor belt, on this occasion, picked up and threw an old notepad into the paper collecting skip. Little did he know that the tatty old book actually contained a small fortune! As the item of “rubbish” took off through the air, a cloud of green 100 euro notes appeared in front of him!
The staff close by, picked up the notebook which was quite thick and discovered to their surprise, that in between nearly every page, was a 100 euro note and in total counted 15,000 euros in cash, otherwise well hidden.
The incident was described on Radio Kriti, by the deputy Mayor of Heraklion, responsible for cleanliness, Mr. Haris Mamoulakis.
It was revealed, by inspecting a lot of the other items sent for recycling,it became apparent that the book belonged to a elderly person, who had passed away and more than likely, had not told relatives or friends of the treasure kept within it’s pages!
