Policeman fined 30,000 euros and service gun withdrawn

Despite the adjournment in the case of the serving police officer from Agios Nikolaos, who is charged with using an air rifle to shoot and injure a neighbour’s dog, the judicial process has not stood still.

According to reports, the police officer has already been given an administrative fine of 30,000 euros, as is required by the law in the case of animal abuse. His superiors have also taken the measure, as a consequence of his behavior, of taking the man’s service weapon away from him, until further notice.

Natasha Bobolaki, who is the President of the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation, contacted the General Regional Police Director of Crete, Mr. Constantinos Lagoudakis and received the assurance that the Police Service has complied in full, with the legal process and will proceed with any additional legal, criminal, administrative and disciplinary action is considered appropriate.

According to Ms. Bobolaki, information has come to her attention that the policeman had abused animals on other occasions and had his own dogs, which he kept in very poor conditions and which, very recently, suddenly disappeared.

The hearing of the case has been rescheduled for 9th April 2017, in Neapolis.
