At least in Heraklion someone is taking action!

Fines are awaiting property owners who are negligent in their responsibility for the maintenance and repair of their properties which are situated directly onto the road.
The councillor responsible for town planning in Heraklion, Mr. Giannis Rasoulis spoke to Radio Kriti and said that it is now a regular occurrence for pieces of plaster, or other materials to fall off old and badly maintained buildings. It is not happening only with the buildings that are protected as listed, but also with more modern properties.
His statement came after an incident on Wednesday in Heraklion, on Theotokopoulou Street, where part of a balcony fell and landed on two cars which were parked below and where fortunately the damage was only material, as no pedestrians were injured as a result of the occurrence.
Mr. Rasoulis emphasised that the responsibility for the maintenance of property that faces onto roads, pavements, squares or other public spaces, is entirely that of the owners.
Any property that is identified as dangerous will be recorded and reported to the Police and the Prosecutor and the owners will have three days to correct the problem. In the case that this is not done, the Council will take measures of it’s own, with a specialist team and the bill for the cost will be sent to the owners.
There must be more than a few properties in Agios Nikolaos, that could very easily fall into this category, if someone took the initiative to prevent accidents that are waiting to happen, rather than trying to pick up the pieces afterwards.
