Fears over new strikes by archaeological site guards

As the new season approaches and with many tourists already present on the Island, a new strike by archeological site guards, is not something that will help promote our Country.

After the 24 hour strike which they held on February 20th, a new strike appears likely after the failure to reach an agreement in a meeting between union representatives and the Culture Minister, Lydia Koniordou, yesterday.

In a statement released after the meeting, the Union representatives said that the Minister had failed to meet the demands of the workers, for conditions of contracts of staff and overtime pay.

They closed by saying that they would meet, to decide further action.

In Crete, 1,314 seasonal positions have been announced, including day and night time guards, cleaning staff and labourers, but it is the conditions of these contracts in particular, that are causing the disagreement with the Unions. Sundays and bank holidays will be classed as normal working days and overtime will not be paid, if time off is given in-lieu, within the period of the contract.
