Changing the face of school

Who says that school is only about lessons and studying?
Over the last few weeks, with the guidance of their teachers, the pupils at the 1st. High School in Agios Nikolaos have been working on putting their signature on and completely changing the face of their school, which is of course a place where they spend so many hours of their lives.
The whole idea began about two years ago when a group of pupils took part in a programme as part of an environmental initiative, for the creation of the first school organic compost pile.
The inspiration came from their lecturers, Manolis Sisamakis and Anastasia Lasthiotaki.
Following a plan by Mr. Manolis Papadimitropoulos,  a range of planting areas were built in the rear yard of the school, which quickly became a self-enriched growing space where the pupils involved, planted various kinds of plants.
The building of these areas was not easy. Red tape and a series of studies and technical reports had to be overcome for the permission for the project to be granted.
Also, hours of voluntary work by many, not only the pupils themselves were required.
Funding was received with help from The Region of Crete and the Parents and Guardians Association.
Once the whole project was in full swing, the next step came from  Aggeliki Svoronou who, as the arts and crafts lecturer, oversaw the transformation of the schools outside areas in a decorative way, using bright colours and all of the imagination of the pupils.
Monday 5th December will see the official opening of the project to the public and all are invited to see the efforts of the children and get more information on the subject of composting.
