Agios Nikolaos General Hospital – update on cooling system leak

The Director of the General Hospital of Agios Nikolaos and the Dialynakeio Health Centre of Neapolis, Mrs. Maria Spinthoura, has released a statement to update to all concerned, following the incident with a water leak, during a trial run of the central cooling system of Hospital in Agios Nikolaos (GHAN).
In the statement, Mrs. Maria Spinthoura, explained that the flood which was caused by a leak in the central cooling system, took place this morning, Friday 5th May 2017, in the new wing of the Hospital, and occurred during a controlled test run of the system.
The source of the leak was from a floor mounted unit situated on the first floor, near to the Administration’s I.T. office and appeared to be as a result of a hole in the tube that feeds the unit with water. As a result of the leak, water passed through the joints and the holes of the piping system, the water then entered the vacant space of the ground floor and continued into the corridor of the storeroom in the basement.
The leak was contained by a technician in under five minutes and all staff responsible, reacted immediately to dispel the water, to clean the areas affected and to remove equipment and records to a safe place, purely as a preventative measure, against possible damage.
Thanks to the speedy reaction and intervention of the staff, and bearing in mind that the test run was controlled, the smooth running of the Hospital was not disturbed, there was no material damage and there was no danger to the health of either patients or staff, (the leaked water was from the cooling system and contained no infected or dangerous substances that could be harmful to health).
The fact remains that the problem seems to be solely associated to the cooling system of the basement, ground and first floors of the new wing, something that will be investigated for any possible liability of the contractors who completed the works some 17 years ago.
Finally, in order to avoid any further problems, and despite the high cost involved, the Administration will take high priority action, for the complete replacement of the cooling system on the three floors affected.
