16 month old baby loses battle for life

For over a month, a 16 month old baby fought to stay alive, but sadly, on Friday 24th March he took his last breath in the Children’s Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital in Heraklion where he was being treated and cared for. With his death, the little boy has left behind pain, sorrow and many unanswered questions.

The child had originally been admitted over a month ago, to the Venizeleio Hospital, but due to complications that he developed with his heart, he was transferred to the specialist ICU for children, at the University Hospital on 15th February.

Despite their terrible loss, the parents found the courage to offer their sons organs for transplant, but due to the length of time that he had been ill and in the ICU, doctors decided that they would not be suitable.

The autopsy which has already taken place, will shed more light on the exact cause of the child’s death and with further test results due to be released within the next few days, the parents are waiting to see if there is any possible area of responsibility on the part of the doctors who may have made mistakes in the treatment of their son.
