The World Day for Stray Animals was established in an initiative by Dutch Animal Welfare organisations in 2010, with the aim of improving awareness in world wide communities, in terms of the fate of the 600 million stray animals, that it is estimated, live under appalling conditions on our planet.
The Animal Welfare Organisations call on all of us to adopt a stray or to take part in programmes and campaigns for their protection.
The date of 4th April was chosen for three reasons:
– It is exactly half a year between the 4th October which is the World Day for Animals
– It is easy to remember (4/4)
– There is no other significant event on that date
