Woman in danger of losing eye from firework

There have been two incidences during these Easter holiday, involving injuries from fireworks.

Two women were the victims this year on the night of Easter Saturday and for the Resurrection celebrations, with one woman facing the possible loss of her eye from a “banger” which exploded next to her in Rhodes. The other woman luckily only suffered minor injuries, from a rocket in Vrontados, Chios.

The more serious incident, involved a young mother who was watching the celebrations outside the church in Analipsi, in Rhodes Town.

Standing on the balcony of her home, which was at a slightly raised street level, exactly opposite the church, with her young daughter at her side, the woman was injured by the pieces of the firework as it exploded next to her on the pavement. One sharp piece hit her in the eye and the damage caused internal bleeding.

She was taken to Rhodes General Hospital by her family, where she is being treated and without having escaped the danger of permanent damage to her vision.

In the other incident, in the village of Vrantaos in Chios, which is world famous, for it’s two church “battle” every Easter, a 16 year old girl was watching the rocket fight, close to the church of Agios Markos, when a stray rocket hit her in the face, leaving her bleeding badly. She was rushed to Chios Hospital, where she was treated. Luckily she had no injuries to her eyes or nasal passage and was sent home after having a number of stitches.
