Two in hospital after attack from pitbull dog

Two people were taken to hospital on Thursday evening, after being attacked by a pitbull type dog in the area of Mesambelies, Heraklion.

The men, 60 and 70 years old, tried to stop the dog from attacking another, smaller dog that was out being walked by a young woman.

As a result, the pitbull turned it’s attention to the men, one the father of the young woman and the other, a neighbour, who suffered bites to their throat, head, stomach, hands and legs.

An ambulance responded to a call from the scene and the two men were taken to Venizeleio hospital for treatment. The neighbour appears to have the more serious injuries, but without his health being threatened.

The man is being treated as an in-patient in the surgical clinic of the hospital to enable doctors to monitor the wounds, whilst the woman’s father was sent home after he had been given the necessary first aid, for his injuries.

The hospital made a statement on the incident, confirming the details and announcing that the man who is still in hospital, is well but doctors want to follow his recovery, from very serious wounds.

Sources suggest that the dog was not a stray, but that it has an owner, but it still is not clear how the attack, happened, first on the smaller dog and then on the two men, with the resulting injuries they incurred.

Another source also says that the pitbull’s owner went to visit the injured man in hospital, as he is also a neighbour and was concerned for the man’s health following the attack from his own dog.
