Tragic irony of fatal hit and run accident

A 70 year old man was killed on Monday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle, as he walked on the rural road between Arkalochori and Pangia, Heraklion. The victim died as a result of his injuries in hospital, whilst the police continued their search for the driver and the car.

The 70 year old had been discovered by a passer-by at 4pm, with serious injuries. He was initially taken by ambulance to the Health Centre in the village. Once his condition had been assessed and stabilized, he was then transferred to Heraklion, but died two hours later.

Sources say that a car was found abandoned near the place where the accident took place, and the owner was seen walking, in a condition that he had no knowledge of what had happened.

Despite his early claims of having nothing to do with the accident, it turned out after further investigations and questioning, that the 68 year old car owner, was actually responsible for the hit and run. The tragic irony? The victim was related to the driver, by marriage.
