Traders Association plan “happenings” in Agios Nikolaos

In a determined effort to try to restore some kind of life – a heartbeat – back into the town of Agios Nikolaos in the evenings, the Traders Association has decided on a scheme of “events” for the summer months, which they have been working on for nearly a year.
The President of the Association, Mr. Odysseas Papadakis explained to fonien.gr and Thanos Korobilias, that in the summer, in order to motivate the hotel guests out into town, certain “happenings” will be planned and advertise, in the hope that both the care and restaurant venues will benefit for an increase in trade, as well as seeing more interest from the visitors to our area, to spend money in the many, individual retail outlets on offer.
The existing custom and activity in the town of an evening, is made up purely of locals and students who live in the centre. The hotels are mostly on the outskirts or outside of town, so initiatives need to be taken to change that and give people a good reason to more often, leave the environment of their hotels.
Mr. Papadakis is working in cooperation with other retailers, with restaurateurs and other venues in the town, to put on weekly events, that will include music, dancing and even fashion shows. Parallel to these activities, visitors will be able to experience at taste of traditional Cretan cuisine, in a dish, that the restaurants will produce and offer.
Last winter’s “White Nights” idea, which the Agios Nikolaos Traders Association organised, was something similar and proved to be a very successful event with locals, in the run up to the Christmas and New Year holidays, and saw much more activity in the centre, than would otherwise have been anticipated on those days of the week.
