Public consultation on traffic flow in Agios Nikolaos town center

A presentation and public consultation of a new traffic flow study, was made recently at the Rex, with the traffic committee of the Council of Agios Nikolaos, listening to the proposals of the transport analyst, Mr. D. Rentzos, in regard to one way systems on the seafront road and the bridge on the lake, a general restriction of traffic in the town centre and regulations on the use of public spaces within the town centre.

The ideas which Mr. Rentzos brought to the table were positively received on the whole, both by officials and bodies of the town, who attended the presentation, showing that there is a will amongst those involved, to see the future with better organisation and smoother traffic flow.

The Mayor, Mr. Antonis Zervos, speaking in reference to the major intervention planned for the town, with the new one way system along the seafront and over the bridge in the lake (in the direction of Palaiologou Street), said that this specific suggestion is expected to achieve a positive effect in the upgrading of the seafront area, taking into account the fact that the width of the road will be restricted, allowing a new survey for the total regeneration of the seafront zone.

Mr. Zervos also referred to other proposals put forward at the consultation, including reforms in the Main Square, the abolition of the circular movement of traffic, along with other targeted interventions, with amendments to existing or the construction of new roundabouts, aimed at improving the movement of traffic.

In addition to these improvements, he reminded that the Council offices will be moving to the former OTE site outside of town, at the beginning of the summer, so many parking spaces should be freed up for visitors to the town. Additional plots of land are also being sought for the creation of even further parking facilities and drop off and pick up points for tourist coaches, close to the harbour are being created, as these vehicles will no longer be permitted access to, or parking in this area.
