The fire services were called out to a fire near to the American Base at Pervolitsa, in Chania yesterday, Thursday at around 5:30 in the afternoon.
A report had come in the a car was on fire and two fire engines with their crews quickly responded and attended the scene.
Once they had put out the flames, by which time the car had been completely destroyed, a rubbish truck driver who was there, showed the firefighters the perpetrator, who was sitting just down the road and under the influence of a large amount of alcohol that he apparently had consumed.
The 45 year old man admitted to the fire crews that he had set the car alight, because, as he explained, he didn’t want his wife, from whom he was separated, to get possession of the car in a settlement of their belongings.
Shortly before the fire crews arrived, the owner of the car had argued with the rubbish truck driver, who had tried to help him put out the fire!
