Lasithi Plateau opening it’s sails…

The Mayor of Lasithi Plateau is calling a meeting to discuss this year’s cultural festival titled “Lasithi is opening it’s sails”, with the central theme being the agricultural-cultural heritage of the windmills on the Plateau.

With the aim of spreading and showcasing the very unique cultural, traditional agricultural heritage of the windmills on the Plateau, Mr. Giannis Stefanakis is inviting all concerned, to a meeting on Friday 10th March at 17.00 in the Town Hall on the Plateau.

The meeting is taking place with the knowledge and support of the Director of the Region of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis and his Deputy for Lasithi, Mrs. Pelagia Petraki has been invited.
Also invited are representatives of the producers of the area, local bodies, political factions and the Church. The agenda for the meeting will be exclusively to plan the events of this year’s Summer Festival.

Another recent meeting had decided to go forward with the certification of the “Traditional Lassiotiko Windmill” in order to preserve the techniques and design of the original 10,000 mills from over a hundred years ago, on the Plateau. Their creator, was a local inventor, Emmanouil Papadakis, who is a hero of the time. His engineering skills, building the first mills, which have become so famous and for which all the residents of the area are so proud.
