Huge rock falls into main road at rush hour

By sheer miracle, an accident was avoided yesterday morning (25/04), when a huge rock fell into the middle of the busy rural road, between Viannos and Heraklion.

Between 08:30 and 09:00 when traffic was heavy on the main road, and approximately one kilometer after the village of Martha, the huge rock (seen in the photograph), came loose and fell into the middle of the road. Purely by luck, did the rock not hit a passing vehicle and the local council have asked that the Region for Crete, who is responsible for the road, take immediate action to prevent any further, similar incidents.

Traffic came to a standstill for some time, according to the news site Echo of Viannos, until a council bulldozer was rushed to the scene, to distance the rock from the road surface.

According to the technical services, it cannot be guaranteed that other rocks on the side of the hill, at that particular point, may also fall.
