Headless corpse found on beach near Kissamos

Only with the findings of the lab tests on tissue samples, will authorities be able to hopefully clarify the identity of the headless corpse, found yesterday afternoon on a beach in Kissamos, Chania.

The autopsy will take place this week, conducted by the Medical Examiner for Rethymnon, Mr. A Papadomanolakis.

According to experts, the exact identity will be very hard to discover, due to the advanced stage of decomposition and also from the lack of a head, which is always an important source of information during an autopsy.

A family which was out walking on the rocky beach of Viglia, just after Kissamos harbour, found the corpse at 2 o’clock and immediately informed the police of their shocking discovery.

Officers from the Coast Guard arrived very quickly on the scene, who reported their findings as a corpse in late stages of decomposition, missing the head, arms and legs and it was not possible to determine if it was of a male or a female, because of the condition.

It is estimated that the body must have been in the water for approximately four months and it has now been taken to the morgue at Chania General Hospital.
