Fury at blatant injustice against the Prefecture of Lasithi

In a written statement released yesterday and which is signed by seven members of the Region of Crete responsible for Lasithi, they express their fury at the government decision made and by which, it appears that the new Northern National Highway planned for Crete, will not extend into the Prefecture of Lasithi.

The statement reads as follows:

“The decision of the Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport, according to our information, to go ahead with the construction of the new Northern National Highway in Crete, with the exception of the section within the Prefecture of Lasithi, will constitute a flagrant injustice against the area and will result in the continued decline and downgrading of Lasithi.

Instead of giving priority or at least an equal standing to the section within our Prefecture, which is in such dire need of improvement, the exact opposite stance is being taken. Pity.

Our Prefecture has always been and remains, a leader in tourism, in agriculture, in olive oil production and in many other fields. We continue to lead in quality and in these difficult times for the Country, can contribute effectively in the growth that was never supported as it should have been, by the State. Lasithi was left behind then and is not being supported even now.

The construction of the Northern National Highway as a modern motorway, is essential and the interest of the Ministry, is commendable. The planning however, as long as our information proves to be accurate, constitutes a serious, unjustifiable and unforgivable wrong. The Ministry is obliged to correct this mistake, before it is too late.”
