Fears for more parcel bombs – eight other suspect packages

Following the explosion of a parcel bomb at the offices of the I.M.F. in Paris and the parcel that was sent to the German Finance Minister, which did not explode, there is speculation and fear amongst authorities, as it appears that an organised plan by terrorists is under way, with the possibility of there being other similar devices enroute.

The parcel at the German Ministry of Finance was intercepted and did not cause any injuries, whilst one woman suffered minor injuries after the package that she was opening at the I.M.F. building, did detonate.

With the confirmation that both parcels had been sent from Greece, there are now serious concerns that other parcels may well be in the system and they will continue to be discovered in the next few days.

The Greek Police believe that they are seeing a repeat of the campaign waged by the Greek terrorist organisation Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire in 2010, when they had also sent a large number of similar devices, that were deliberately posted to arrive gradually at their chosen addresses. The organisation has already taken responsibility for the German package.

Since yesterday, the authorities are on red alert, as are the offices and warehouses of the Greek Post Office (ELTA), through which the parcel bombs were sent. If their suspicions are proven correct, any other parcels discovered, will also show having been sent by a Greek politician and with the address and recipient being a European executive or body.

They are now examining the electronic archives, which with the new system that they have, it stores the pictures taken at the postal sorting centres, of the thousands of parcels that have passed through in the last few days. This was how the parcel was intercepted in Germany, which contained just 31 grams of gunpowder and in this way, they will be able to forewarn the recipients.

The fact that the x-ray machines and explosive detectors of the Greek Post Office did not identify these parcel, has raised serious questions regarding the private company that has the contract for this role, within the Organisation. It seems that taking advantage of gaps in the system of security, that the terrorists appeared to be aware of, the lives of airport staff, airline passengers, post office staff and other citizens, were endangered.
