Falling tree hits car between Chania and Rethymnon

By only a few centimetres, the driver of this car wasn’t more seriously injured, when a tree fell from the side of the national highway between Chania and Rethymnon.

The driver was travelling along the highway, at the junction for Calyves when, due to the severe weather conditions, the accident happened.

The tree fell, literally a few centimetres from the cabin and the passenger seat, in a situation that could have caused the driver his life.
From the photographs, it is quite clear with how much force the tree must have hit the moving vehicle, judging by the damage caused. The driver was very lucky to escape without serious injury, from the accident.

The area where the tree fell was an area which had suffered fire damage during the summer months and the burnt out trees are now rotting on the land. The authorities had made no effort to cut down or remove the trees to avert this kind of accident happening and it is disconcerting to think that had the outcome been different in this case, the blame or responsibility would have been very hard to pinpoint.

The weather was not directly to blame for what happened. If the rotten trees had been cut down or removed altogether, no strong wind could have sent one up into the air and hitting a moving car. Who will now take responsibility for the fact that this vehicle is now a right off, and what if the accident had had a different outcome for the driver?
