Dangerous cargo on ferry boat

The officers of the Central Harbour Police have increased their inspections of cargos being brought onto the Island, on board the ferry boats from Piraeus, in order to restrict and control the movement of certain items, including contraband products.

They came up trumps today, with the discovery of a highly illegal and dangerous load of chemicals, which arrived unaccompanied, this morning.

According to reports in ekriti.gr, during a search conducted by the officers of the Harbour Police, they discovered 500 kilos of sodium hydroxide and 100 kilos of fungicides.

The regulations which control the permissibility of items carried on board passenger ferries, state that the quantity of sodium hydroxide involved, can only be transported on a ferryboat with special permission, whilst the fungicides are strictly prohibited altogether.

The initial investigation is being carried out by the Harbour Police of Piraeus, from where the the boat departed and according to information, a specific person is most likely the driver and transport company involved with the truck and it’s unauthorised cargo.

The authorities in Heraklion are handling the administrative side of procedures.
