Cricket comes to Crete

What do you do with your Sunday afternoons? Take a walk in the mountains, a drive to visit friends or family, some gardening, a swim maybe, a game of football?

In Chania, Sunday afternoons have become synonymous with a sport which is very rarely seen in Greece, with the exception possibly of Corfu, but for this group of local residents in the city, it is their national sport.

Cricket. A game that the Pakistani and Indian residents of Chania, have in their blood, have grown up playing in the streets, just like other children play football.

The group discovered an area of land on the western side of the walled moat, which had been left pretty much to waste and now regularly organise a game amongst friends, to remind them of home and their favourite sport.

As long as the area was not required for another purpose, they decided to set up their wickets, take their ball and bats and pass their day off, in a very relaxed and traditional way.

Other countries that also play a lot of cricket, are of course England, but also Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and others and who knows if one day soon, we might see inter-County cricket games on Crete between other teams and/or nationals?
