Crete participates in “SMART ISLANDS” initiative

The Region of Crete, along with representatives of other island regions from all over Europe, is participating in the initiative, with the title “SMART ISLANDS – new paths for European islands – creating smart, complete and thriving island communities, for an innovative and viable Europe”, which was hosted by the European Parliament and organised by the network DAFNE.

The event was opened with a greeting statement by the Greek, European Member of Parliament, Eva Kaili, which was followed by interventions from ten other members of parliament, from other EU member Countries.

A declaration was signed by which it was agreed, amongst other things, the promotion, both locally and on a regional level, of the following topics:

– Actions taken against climate change
– Development of new-smart technologies for the improved management of resources and infrastructure
– Promotion of friendly energy supplies
– Smart water management
– Maintenance of the natural and cultural “capital” resources

The Region of Crete had declared it’s positive stance to this particular initiative and intends to bring the declaration before the Regional Council Committee, for signature and ratification.

The representative of the Region for Crete at the event in Brussels, was Mr. Dimitris Androutsos.
