98,000 fines from speed cameras on BOAK

A total of 98,000 fines have been issued during the three years in which the speed cameras have been in operation on the Northern National Highway (BOAK), on Crete. The measure has in part helped to reduce the number of road traffic accidents, but has not been successful in wiping out the dangerous and illegal habits of drivers, as can be seen in the figures released by the Traffic Police.
The majority of fines are recorded for speeding, and of all of all the fines, only 1 in 4 is recorded during the summer months, which indicates that we become better drivers, during the months when we have more visitors to the Island.
All together, on the entire length of the BOAK, there are 36 cameras recording speed violations, but as most regular drivers are now well aware of where they are located, it is normal practise to reduce speed when approaching one of these points, to avoid being recorded.
Those that violate the speed limit are faced with high fines, with losing their driver’s license for differing lengths of time, including being forced to resit the examination process from the beginning, in order to obtain a license to drive again.
