480 million euros offer for new airport in Kastelli

A financial offer of 480 million euros has been submitted for the construction of the new International Airport in Kastelli, by the consortium of companies, TERNA-GMR Airports Limited (Ariadne Airport Group), according to reports in Capital.gr.

In detail, after the unsealing of the Folder C (Financial Offer), the details of the proposal by the consortium are as follows:

Construction costs 480 million euros instead of the 850 million euros which had been the estimate of the
Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure.

Financial involvement of the Public sector of 180 million euros as opposed to the estimated 220 million as quoted in the regulations of the auction.

The participation of the Public sector in the operation, at 46% instead of the original proposal of 45%.

The airport taxes being much lower than 20 euros, in other words, comparatively lowerthan the Regional Airport of Chania.

It is estimated that the construction stage could commence at the beginning of 2018.

Following the unsealing of the financial proposal, the next stage is the contract with company who will handle the airport, a contract that will be for 37 years duration. This contract must go before the High Court in confirm it’s legality, with the final stage being the approval of Parliament.

The new airport will replace the existing airport in Heraklion “Nikos Kazantzakis” and will be of a size, suitable for use by B747 and A330 aircraft.

The project will proceed with joint Public and Private funding, in the same method of that of the “Eleftherios Venizelos” International Airport in Athens.
