1,500 euro fine amongst new anti-smoking regulations

In another attempt at implementing the existing anti-smoking laws, the Ministry for Health has announced a series of measures and regulations, which take into account the current situation amongst smokers.

At the same time, the Ministry said that it would be asking all the authorities responsible for overseeing the implementation of the law and issuing the appropriate penalties, to increase the regularity and quantity of routine and nonroutine spot checks, in particular in tavernas, cafeterias, bars and restaurants.

A fine of 1,500 euros will be applicable when anyone is found by the police to be smoking in a car, in the presence of a child under 12 years of age. The offence will stand both for the driver and any passengers and will apply to the use of normal cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and any other tobacco products.

Parallel to the new regulations, the use of electronic cigarettes is to be banned in all public places and civil servants who smoke whilst on duty, will face disciplinary action.

Reports will be created to monitor the number of checks being carried out, the number of infringements recorded and in cases where fines have been given, a programmed routine of return visits to ensure the implementation of the law. In the case of repeated violations, the license of the offending business will be withdrawn.
