Spinalonga-UNESCO file complete

The completed file, which is required for the application by the Mayor of Agios Nikolaos to UNESCO, for the inclusion of Spinalonga in their catalogue of World Heritage Sites, was presented to Mr. Zervos today.
We have been informed , that the file has already been sent in three copies, via the Department of Antiquities at the Ministry for Culture.
“Regardless of the intention of the Municipal Authority, at this stage, we are looking forward to the suggestions to be made by the Ministry for Culture, which will manage the integration of the monument”, said Mayor Mr. Antonis Zervos.
“We consider it important that, in the proposed protected area, the hamlet of Tsifliki is included, something that the municipality of Agios Nikolaos considers crucial – for the acquisition of the Late Venetian Period building, used as a home, and as a base station during the Ottoman domination, where Sakir Aga Papoutsoglou resided during the summers – a detail which reinforces the effort for it’s integration into the overall site,” he added.
“It is a favourable coincidence that we also now have the proposal for the restoration and extension of this building, provided by a local architectural student, which will be adopted by the Municipality and as a project, will be put into the planning system urgently”. Mr. Zervos concluded.
