Do we have lifeguards for our beaches for the new season?

Reading an article on the subject of the employment of lifeguards on the beaches on the Prefecture of Chania recently, it raised the question of perhaps whether we should also ask what is happening on the same subject on the beaches of Lasithi and in particular in the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos?

In the area of Chania, no bids were received by the authorities for the contract put out for auction, to provide lifeguards, from the regional lifeguard schools, on the beaches there. The reason, apparently, was the extremely low amount being offered as a fee per hour, for the presence of someone on the beach, qualified to save our lives and the lives of our friends and family if needed – in the article concerning the situation in Chania, the title was, “ How much is a human life worth?”

Ahead of the new tourist season, one which we hear will be, and hope to see as being an exceptional season in terms of the number of tourists visiting our area, the issue is highly important, bearing in mind that the product we are selling is very much our weather, our beaches, our seas…….

Seeing the people responsible for our beaches, begin giving the beaches a face lift, but hearing at the same time that there is a legal issue with those who wish to operate them, we should also ask the question, have contracts been signed in the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos for the daily provision of lifeguards, oo all the main beaches in the area?
