The annual awards ceremony to honour local athletes who have achieved new heights in their particular field in 2016, will take place on Friday 30th December at the Rex Cinema.
The event celebrates it’s tenth year and has proved to be an ideal way to acknowledge the efforts of all those in the Municipality who compete, either under the “flag” of a local athletics association or independently.
The awards are given under three specific categories, the first and highest being that given to athletes who have reached the top six on a Panhellenic level in their event.
The second category is for “special achievements”. Either for individual achievement or ongoing excellent progress of athletes in their field, but without reaching the level required by the first category.
Honorable awards are the third of the three categories and are given where continued success over a number of years has been maintained.
The organisation of the awards is by the Cultural and Athletics Organisation of Agios Nikolaos and awards will also be given by them in acknowledgement of the groups and bodies who, without their support, the athletes could not have reached their own personal targets.
The particular fields where the athletes have competed this year are:
Greco-Roman wrestling – 18 athletes
Sailing Group of A.N. (IOAN) – Evniki Boat with 5 man team
Motorcyclists of A.N. Club (LE.M.A.N.) – 4 athletes
TALOS – Climbing Society – 3 athletes
Nautical Club of A.N. – 2 athletes and their coach
Athletic Club “Lato” Chess Group – 1 athlete and her coach
Athletic Association of Disabled Athletes “LATTIOS” – 2 athletes and their trainers
The Mountaineering Club “VIOKINISI” – 2 athletes
“MINOTAUR” Traditional Taekwondo Group – 12 athletes
Sports Association “MINOTAVROS” Kickboxing – 7 athletes
Athletics Association Lassithi “AOL” – 6 athletes
Non-affiliated athletes – 10
Special awards – 3
Awards to bodies and groups – 6
Honorary award – 1
