Greek University affected by cyber attack

Greece wasn’t exempt from the activities of the “crackers” who caused the widescale and seriously damaging cyber attack against institutions, organisations and corporations, yesterday.
The attack, using the method of Malware infection – encryption virus (ransomware), which started in the U.K. and in particular, in the National Health Service, then spread with unexpected speed, to many countries, all over the planet.
It has become known today that the Aristoteleio University of Thessaloniki was also targeted with what have been called waves of cyber attacks, since Friday.
On Saturday morning the Electronic Crime Prosecutor’s Section, was informed by the administrator of the Electronic Governance Center of the Aristotle University that many users of the platform have complained to the Service of Internet Service Providers about the symptoms of aggressive infection by malware – a cryptographic virus (ransomware). Symptoms of malware infection include encryption of local files, files on removable media (eg USB Flash Drives or USB hard disks) as well as files in Internet folders.
The University immediately released an announcement regarding the incident and advising users of the site to take measures to protect their own computers:
“To help protect your computer, make sure to update your antivirus program and your computer’s operating system today. Disconnect the copiers from your computer (usb stick, portable discs) and do not open any attachment files you received from unknown senders as they may contain the virus.”
