Fraud in the name of the Charity “ The Smile of the Child”

In an announcement by the Charity itself, incidents of fraud committed using the name of the Organisation have been reported in different areas over Greece, including one in Agios Nikolaos, Crete.
In an attempt to gather money and certain items for the Charity, and taking advantage of the seasonal spirit of the time of year, fraudsters are claiming to be collecting on behalf of the Charity “The Smile of the Child”, a very popular and active Charity all over the Country.
The incident reported in Agios Nikolaos refers to a woman, probably English, who has been visiting Chemists in the area and asking for donations of medicine for the Charity.
In a statement by the Charity, they emphasise that they never look to gain funding by walking the streets, going door to door, by telephone or by any kind of “sale”or collection of goods.
All monetary donations are made only via a specific bank account in the name of the Charity or at it’s offices or premises. They confirm that for every donation, regardless of size, a fully legitimate receipt is always issued. Regular publication of the Charity’s activities and financial standing are made public.
The “Smile of the Child” asks anyone who becomes aware of any suspicious activity “on their behalf”, to report the details to  the Police, and to contact the Organisation on their National Helpline for Children SOS 1056.
