The general secretary of the Hotel Workers Association, Mrs. Maria Fazou, arrived for a meeting at the Worker’s Centre in Agios Nikolaos this morning, looking worried and in need of some advice.
The reason for her concern, was a beautiful heron, which was walking in the middle of the road from Ammoudi to Agios Antonios church. Fearful for fate of the bird, that seemed to be injured, she asked for advice about what she could do and who to turn to, to get help.
The local vet, Yannis Fouskis was contacted, as was the forestry commision, who arrived quickly and with the help of the gamekeeper George Skyvalos, the two men safely captured the bird and took it to the vet’s surgery.
The vet examined the heron and found an injury to it’s eye. Talking to fonien.gr he said that it could have been caused by a fight with a cat or another animal, or even from a branch. It was very weak in general and appeared to not have eaten for several days, possibly since it received the injury, which wasn’t new.
The beautiful bird, who has now been taken care of by loving hands, will be taken to the laboratory of the Natural History Museum in Heraklion, until it regains the strength to be set free once more.
