Ambulance crew help injured horse in centre of Athens (some may be upset by pictures)

For those who were at the scene early on Sunday evening, where one of two horses pulling a carriage collided with a taxi, the images were shocking.

The accident happened at Zappeio, in the heart of Athens, where according to witnesses, a taxi braked quickly, with the result that the horse nearer to the centre of the road to reared up in reaction and his leg was very badly lacerated, as it came down and went through the rear window of the vehicle.

For the good fortune of the horse, a high speed response unit of the ambulance service, was passing the scene on a motorbike and stopped to offer their help. The team were able to stop the heavy bleeding, which could have been fatal, if left a lot longer.

The injured horse was then taken by a horse-carrier, for more specialised treatment at the veterinary clinic at the Athens Racecourse.
