In memory of Melina Mercouri and her fight for the return of the Marbles

Maria Amalia Mercouri, known professionally as Melina Mercouri, was a Greek actress, singer and politician. Born on 31 October 1920 in Athens, she passed away on the 6th of March, 1994 at the age of 74.

Thirty-five years have passed since Melina Mercouri launched the campaign for the return of the Parthenon sculptures currently at the British Museum.
Parthenon Marbles in British Museum.Given her great contribution to raise global awareness for the reunification of the Parthenon sculptures, the Acropolis Museum has produced a video about the removal of the sculptures from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin and Melina Mercouri’s international campaign, with material provided by the Melina Mercouri Foundation.


The 23-minute video will be on display on Monday, March 6, from 10am to 4pm at the auditorium on the ground floor of the museum.
Entry will be free for visitors to both the auditorium and the Museum exhibition areas. Like every Monday, the Museum will be open from 9am to 5pm.
