Trade Association propose ideas to ease town centre traffic congestion

The Traders Association of Agios Nikolaos has issued a written statement to the Council, as part of the ongoing public discussion on the issue of traffic congestion, which outlines their proposals and ideas, with regard to improving the smooth flow of traffic in the town centre.
The members feel that the tourist coaches should drop off visiting tourists in the harbour, but then leave and park elsewhere until they return for the appointed pick-up time for departure. In this way, the parking space that is made available can be utilised by visitors and locals who are using cars.
They also believe that some measure of restricted access to certain vehicles must be implemented, from the Marina and around to the harbour, between 19:00 and the early hours of the morning, so that pedestrians will be able to enjoy strolling around the town more.
It must be feasible for the public and private parking facilities within that restricted “zone”, are still easily accessible to drivers.
A beautiful part of the town, is the seafront promenade which is has been totally neglected. A solution must be found to make it safer for pedestrians as both the paving stones are in a poor condition, in some cases, even dangerous and lighting is inadequate.
When the planned one-way system is implemented on this section of road, provisions must be made for the needs and convenience of those on foot.
The Traders Association also plan to request that the council allot specific strategic places around the town where they will be able to position signs with a map of the town centre. With this initiative, the members of the Association believe that visitors will find their way around much more easily.
