Shipwreck off Andros – pollution fears

The cargo ship “Cabrera”, sank today off the island of Andros, fortunately without loss of lives.
Nine crew members were transferred to Sismanogleio Hospital for precautionary reasons, after being airlifted to safety, when the ship hit rocks in bad weather, off the north of the Island and took a 45 degree tilt.

Despite the wind currently reaching 7-8 beaufort, in the area, it is expected that three tugs will reach the wreck this afternoon. They will assess the situation, where it has already been established that there is low level pollution in the sea.

The ship was carrying a cargo off 3,500 metric tonnes of steel and had approximately 20 tonnes of fuel in it’s tanks. There is still no official announcement of the ship taking on water.
Having set sail from the Greek port of Larymna, destined for Finland, the crew of the Cabrera  is made up of three Poles, one Ukrainian and four Filipinos.
