Belgian tourists found safe and well

Exhausted from the fatigue and from the cold, after their all night adventure in Crete, two Belgian tourists were eventually found safe and well, after losing their way in the Gorge of Tripiti, in Chania on Thursday afternoon.
The couple were found at 05.30 this morning Friday, at an altitude of 1,500 metres and an operation to rescue them began immediately.

All night long, officers of the Chania Fire and Rescue Services, had been in hourly contact with the two trapped tourists and as soon as they located them, they offered first aid, water and lit a fire to keep them warm.

The Belgian visitors to Crete, had gone hiking and probably became disorientated, which resulted in them becoming trapped in the gorge, between Omalos and Sougia.

Around 7.15pm on Thursday evening, they called 112 and reported being lost, adding that the position they were in, was dangerous.

The Fire and Rescue Services were advised of the situation and in a short time, began the operation to find and rescue the 26 and 28 year old tourists.

The position where they were found was particularly inaccessible, where there is still snow and the approach from the slopes by the rescue team, took time and careful management.
