Tornado hits Sitia (photos and video)

The whole of Crete experienced somewhat tropical weather conditions yesterday, Saturday, with heavy rain, spectacular thunderstorms and hail stones the size of cherries in some parts of the island.
The tornado that struck the Municipality of Sitia on Saturday morning however, made headlines on a national level, both due to how unusual a phenomenon it was for the area, but also sadly, due to the degree of destruction it left behind in it’s wake!
The damage to crops and to the property of those living on the seaside, is clear. Metal panelling cut electricity cables, flying trees cause damage to the smaller electrical substations, causing a complete blackout in the area of the Sitia Beach.
Technicians from DEH are working hard to repair the problem.
The hail stones caused irreparable damage to all the fruit bearing trees. No accounts of injury were reported.
