Policeman charged with shooting dog in Agios Nikolaos

The whole of the Country is buzzing after hearing of an incident that took place here in Agios Nikolaos and which has since been publicised by a local, well known journalist, Michalis Atsalakis. The content is not very pleasant.

A policeman shot a dog, fortunately, not seriously, in the town of Agios Nikolaos, and the animal’s owner gave an interview on camera, with Mr. Atsalakis, to explain what exactly happened, but with the video not revealing her face and with her voice distorted.

She explained that she had taken her dog for a walk as she does every morning, and as usual, her neighbour’s dog followed along beside them. On the way back, and whilst approaching her neighbour’s house, she heard two gunshots. She stopped in her tracks out of fear and then quickly continued, but then heard a third shot. She immediately realised that her dog had been hit and at the same time, she saw her neighbour going back into his house through his front door, holding a firearm.

Her neighbour she continued, is a policeman and she had no reason to believe that he had any grievance with her. She has seen him in the summer, sitting on his balcony and taking shots at the cats in the road, without hiding his actions.

We hadn’t reported him before for what he had done, but this time we did go to the Police and report what happened with our dog. The Police took a statement and the woman took a also gave them a report from the vet who treated the dog for it’s wounds. The Police, she said, were very efficient in the way they handled the situation, without showing special treatment to the man because he happened to be a police officer. He was arrested and charged for the offense.
